About the Ontario Autism Program (OAP)

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) was introduced by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) now known as the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCSS) in June 2017 to replace Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) which was implemented by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services in 1999. With the goal of making services more accessible for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families, the OAP is designed to deliver evidence-based behavioural services to help those with a diagnosis of ASD based on their needs and strengths.

The current Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is a complex makeup of Legacy OAP Behaviour Plans, Childhood Budgets, Interim One-Time Funding, and the new Core Clinical Services pilot-program currently being introduced. Toronto IBI is qualified to supervise and provide services to children under all OAP programs.

Families who have secured a spot in the OAP behavioural services for their child are given the right to choose who delivers their child's behavioural services. There is an option to receive behavioural services through the family's regional provider (Direct Service Option or DSO) or to receive funding and purchase behavioural services through a direct funding provider (Direct Funding Option or DFO).

Toronto IBI was one of the limited DFO service providers that was approved under the province's previous IBI program and continues to be a DFO provider in the new OAP.

As required by the ministry, Toronto IBI will assist families in identifying your child's goals, strengths, and needs and also plan for their behavioural services. Toronto IBI meets all the clinical requirements set forth by the Ontario ministry to both supervise and deliver the evidence-based behavioural services for children participating in the OAP.

Collaboration with Families

We recognize the difficulties of having a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and understand that families will advocate for what is best for their child. Often this will include the incorporation of different classes and activities aimed at broadening their child's development.

At Toronto IBI, we always encourage families to involve their child in as many new activities and classes as possible, as increased exposure to new experiences result in an increase in learning opportunities. Toronto IBI will be there every step of the way to help aid you and your child as you navigate through different extracurricular activities.
